What Does Making Art Mean To You?

As an artist (the rock-and-roll kind), every so often I get seriously introspective and think about heavy things like..."What is the meaning of life?", "What am I doing that matters right now?", "What will people say about me as a person after I'm gone?" -- you get the picture.

Being an artist, sometimes I wonder about art, what it is and what it means.  If you've been reading any of my posts you know that I'm a Godin-ite (love following Seth Godin's blog on Marketing and life in general).  Check out Seth's take on Art...

Deep Thots by Mooki: Lyrical Frugality

Okay, so we have one song right that we are tracking and the song is rocking BUT no lyrics!!! Not a problem -- I love to right lyrics. Well - maybe a problem if I think too much about them. Sometimes it takes me years to get the lyrics "right". I'm pretty picky (to say the least) about word choice and structure for our songs.

Anyway, I'm about to sit down (during our lunch break) and try to pen some inspiring lyrics and we here a song come on from Gigs' Ipod. In my opinion this must be one the MOST LYRICALLY FRUGAL, ECONOMICALLY CONSCIOUS songs I have ever heard (I through in "economic" because Eli is studying Economics right now...). The song is "What If" by Creed; over 90% of the song's lyrics are the three words "what", "if", and "I". Wow!

Deep Thot by Mooki:
Who would have thought that a song could be so successful with 3 words (and not the most common 3 words for songs -- eg "I LOVE YOU")!?!?!?!?

Back to me -- word choice, structure, rhyme, patterns, oh my! This last unlyric'd song is ROCKING and my heart is that the words are the kind cut deep and take root and become owned more by the hearer than even by me.

God, use us and this song for years to come...

Devo by Mooki -- "Dream"

I've always been a dreamer (and I LOVE to see others pursuing their dreams). I have a dream of having the privilege of being in front of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of people leading them in worship. All of the people going crazy for just one thing – longing for God's name to be glorified and known everywhere. Imagine whole cities of people unashamedly dancing, shouting, crying, blessing, expressing in any way possible their heart-felt love, adoration, thanksgiving for the One they love. I know it's crazy (and logistically would probably require a ton of law enforcement resources!) but WOW! Just one of my dreams... Anyone else a dreamer?!??!?! Just about every time I am reminded of Ephesians 3:20-21, I get chills because it stirs my heart with hope and wonder and strength. Every time with the band or leading worship in any other situation and the people start getting excited, it reminds me of this dream and I get chills (this usually happens when we are performing Praise Adonai -- it's amazing!)...

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Are you a dreamer? Well, even if you're not a soul that is hopelessly addicted to dreaming thing like me, you are still a candidate for experiencing "immeasurably
more than all we ask or imagine" through God's power for God's glory everywhere and in every period of history – forever and ever and ever and ever. "Amen" -- in other
words -- "Nothing more needs to be said!"

How did you get into the music industry? Always drawn to music (played piano, flute, french horn, trumpet as a kid). Just pursuing my passion for creating and performing music and using it to connect with people.

Favorite vacation spot: Anywhere with my fam!

Favorite food: Sausage, egg & cheese on a freshly baked "everything" bagel (has to be a NY bagel, they're the best in the world!) My favorite bagel place is Hot Bagels Abroad (Bloomfield, NJ). They have the
BEST BEST bagels in the world.

Favorite drink: Java Chip Frappuccino from Starbucks

Guilty pleasure: TV Shows: Heroes, Fringe, The
Office; watching DVD movies from RedBox (only $1 a night) bundled up with covers on the couch with my whole family.

Worst fear: Heights. Not sure if my "worst" fear. I learned this when I was working for a friend who installed pre-fab fireplaces. It's pretty scary climbing on the roofs of unfinished houses (only plywood) that are covered with a bunch of snow and ice.

What was your very first job? Delivering
newspapers and mowing lawns.
